There are many special things about San Juan Island that the locals consider "secrets" and which they jealously guard.  At the risk of being banished from the island, we'll tell you about some of them.  You have to promise to keep them to yourself, though!

One local favorite attraction that few visitors to the islands make a point of enjoying is the hike to the top of Young Hill.  It's a short mile and a half from the trailhead at English Camp, although it seems a little longer due to the steep incline.  The reward at the top makes it all worthwhile however; the view facing north, west, and south from the top is spectacular, with vistas encompassing Roche Harbor, Mitchell Bay, and Snug Harbor.  You can easily see Vancouver Island beyond Haro Strait, with Victoria, British Columbia's tall buildings easily visible on a clear day.

A favorite activity for locals occurs the first Saturday of every month during the Summer.  Westcott Bay Oyster Farm features a U-Pick oyster event that's been a favorite for many years.  Bring your rubber boots and a bucket and walk the farm's beaches, picking up your choice of a wide selection of local and European oysters.  Add a small barbecue, garlic butter, and a bottle of Chardonnay and your feast is complete!
